Casa Arcobaleno: a Shelter for LGBTQ+ Youth

Redazione by Redazione

Reading Time: 1 min read

Milan is definitely the most LGBTQ+ friendly city in all of Italy and it is here that Casa Arcobaleno (Rainbow House) was born – a social project to protect young people belonging to the LGBTQ+ community.

Opened in July 2019, Casa Arcobaleno is an apartment made available and managed by the social cooperative Spazio Aperto Servizi, in collaboration with the Milan City Council. The apartment is open to all young people who, after coming out, are discriminated against by their families because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Casa Arcobaleno is a safe refuge, a place where residents are welcome and can be themselves without worrying about repercussions.  It could initially accommodate a maximum of 3 people for a maximum period ranging from 6 to 8 months, but has since been expanded due to demand in the community.  During their stay, residents also have access to a psychological and legal support service, as well as job and housing guidance.

After leaving Casa Arcobaleno and until they have achieved economic independence, the former residents will have access to other housing options with subsidized leases.
